Preparing for a caregiver in your home

How to Prepare a Home for an Amada Senior Care Professional

Bringing an Amada caregiver into your loved one’s home—whether it’s for a few hours a week or around-the-clock support—requires some thoughtful preparation. Here’s a streamlined guide to ensure everyone stays safe, comfortable, and confident.

    1. Stock Essentials Ahead of Time 🧴

Make sure your home is ready with necessary supplies, including:

    ●  Cleaning items

    ●  Paper products

    ●  Spare light bulbs

    ●  Personal care products (soap, shampoo, razors)

    ●  Groceries

    ●  Pet food and supplies

    ●  Easy-access storage for all of the above
Amada can coordinate delivery or provide recommendations. Also, set aside cozy seating and agree on thermostat settings to create a welcoming atmosphere.

    2. Prioritize Safety
To keep both your loved one and the caregiver safe:

    • Clear clutter to prevent trips

    • Test stair railings and steps

    • Ensure appliances are usable

    • Install grab bars by tubs/toilets

    • Use non-slip bath mats and keep bathroom doors unlocked

    • Set water heaters to ≤ 120 °F

    • Illuminate all areas well—replace any burned-out bulbs

    • Remove throw rugs and keep carpets secure

    • Install smoke detectors and keep a fire extinguisher nearby

    • Provide shower chairs and keep mobility aids in good condition

Also inspect entryways, porches, and walkways for hazards. Amada caregivers can assist with professional safety reviews.

    3. Introduce Pets Gradually

Pets often meet your caregiver first! Secure them in another room or on a leash initially. Then, gradually introduce them when the caregiver and senior are both comfortable.

    4. Share Vital Information

Ensure your Amada caregiver has clear insight into your senior’s needs:

    • Medical history and current medications

    • Daily routines and personal preferences

    • Favorite activities, hobbies, and topics of conversation

    • Life history and interests
For those living with dementia, share additional details like communication tips, behavioral patterns, and effective calming
      strategies.

    5. Prepare Your Senior Loved One
First visits can feel intrusive. Help your loved one feel at ease by:

    • Engaging them early in conversations about care needs

    • Framing care as supportive, not supervisory

    • Introducing the caregiver gradually—like a few hours a week at first

    • Sitting in on initial visits so they can familiarize themselves
This builds trust and helps your loved one and caregiver form a productive, caring relationship.

    6. Plan for Long-Term Adaptation

Adjustments may be needed as care evolves. Amada’s scheduling flexibility and care team rotation can help. If a caregiver pairing isn’t working, notify Amada—they'll find someone better suited.

    Why It Matters

A well-prepared home expedites seamless care. It ensures safety, enhances comfort, and fosters respectful, meaningful connections between your senior, your family, and the Amada care team.
